We are also supporting a project that works with communities in the Northwest Frontier Province to implement community-based economic development tied to wildlife conservation. The first pilot programme designed to offset livestock losses to disease has reduced livestock mortality rates and curtailed the hunting of snow leopards and their prey. The livestock vaccination project that we support started in Kuju and Parson, and has now expanded to five new communities with our help and that of other supporters. The project covers the full cost of vaccines in the first two years, 50% in the third, and 25% in the final year. After that, the herders pay the full cost. The average community has 1,500 animals, and vaccine costs are about $.75 per animal. As herd populations increase, excess animals are sold to maintain the original herd size and raise funds for the herders and vaccine costs. If any herder breaks the agreement they will be removed from the programme for one year.
